Honda gave the Accord a facelift and refresh for the 2021 model year, so keep that in mind as you look at what’s available, but hybrid performance didn’t change. One of the most well-known and important hybrid cars in the auto industry is the Toyota Prius, a vehicle that many people credit for popularizing hybrid vehicles in general. One of the most popular cars on the road, the Hyundai Sonata is a midsize sedan that’s been available since the 1980s. The hybrid version doesn’t go that far back; however, the Sonata Hybrid first became available with the sixth generation of this car and the 2011 model year, but it’s been offered by Hyundai ever since. In the years since then, Hyundai released a seventh generation of the Sonata in 2016, followed by an eighth generation in 2020.

Looking at these eighth-generation Sonata Hybrid models, you get a fantastic midsize sedan that delivers some of the most impressive fuel economy out there—coming second only to what Toyota delivers. With a 2020 Sonata Hybrid, for example, you’ll get an estimated 50 MPG in the city, 54 MPG on the highway, and 52 MPG of combined fuel economy. Hyundai has recently given the Sonata a facelift for the 2024 model year, but used Sonata Hybrids from the last few years will have some of the latest tech features to ensure you have a great drive in Westminster.

Hybrid Car #4 – The Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry is an incredibly popular vehicle that’s been around since the early 1980s; it started off as a compact car but grew into a midsize sedan in the early 1990s. Since then, it’s been through numerous generations across the last 30 years, but a hybrid engine didn’t become available until fairly recently. The first Toyota Camry Hybrid model was launched at the start of Camry’s seventh generation and the 2007 model year. This generation ran through 2011, followed by a new generation from 2012 to 2017, and the current generation kicked off with the 2018 model (the next generation is launching with the 2025 Camry).

Throughout these years, Toyota has used what they’ve learned in developing the Prius to improve the performance, efficiency, and quality of the Camry Hybrid. While many other car companies have sheepishly offered a single hybrid model, Toyota has repeatedly proven itself to be the leader of this segment, and the Camry Hybrid is the perfect example of that. The Toyota Camry Hybrid has remained a fantastic option throughout the years. Recent models deliver incredible performance and efficiency: a 2020 Camry Hybrid has a 208-hp engine that delivers an estimated 51 MPG in the city and 53 MPG on the highway. With spacious interiors, large trunks, and big Infotainment screens on display, a used Camry Hybrid is a great pick.

Hybrid Car #5 – The Ford Fusion Hybrid

So far, we’ve only looked at vehicles that are still available; part of the fun of looking at pre-owned models, however, is shopping for vehicles that aren’t being made anymore. The perfect example is the Ford Fusion, which was available from the 2006 model year through 2020 when it was discontinued as part of Ford shaking up their lineup. A hybrid version of the Fusion was launched initially for the 2010 model year during a refresh for its first generation and remained available throughout the rest of its run.

Ford released a second-generation Fusion for the 2013 model year, with its hybrid engine still on offer and a plug-in hybrid version joining it. The Fusion received a facelift for the 2017 model year, then another update for the 2019 model that included improvements to the plug-in hybrid Ford Fusion range. Its final model year beautifully showcases the impressive performance Ford had achieved: the 2020 Fusion Hybrid features a 2.0L hybrid engine that offers an estimated 43 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway. It’s a shame that new Fusion models are no longer available, but you can find great Fusion Hybrids when looking at pre-owned vehicles.
