2023 Toyota Crown

A red and black 2023 Toyota Crown is angled left.
After 50 years away from the US market, the Toyota Crown is set to make a triumphant return worthy of its regal name with a stunning design and remarkable engineering that is sure to make it the king of the car market. The all-new 2023 Toyota Crown is a truly unique piece of machinery: a sedan that rides like a crossover with a pair of powerful hybrid engines available that creates an incredible driving experience. Nothing else is on the road quite like it, and whether you are interested in a new sedan, you prioritize fuel efficiency in your car, or you want an all-wheel drive (AWD) hybrid vehicle, the Crown has you covered.

Not every sedan on the road has an engine worth bragging about, but the all-new Crown is far from being every other sedan. The standard engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid that delivers a net horsepower of 236 and comes paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Every model comes with AWD standard, but the real star of the show is the available Hybrid MAX 2.4L turbocharged engine that delivers a net rating of 340 hp and 400.4 lb-ft combined net torque. No matter which one you choose, you get a fantastic driving experience, with the two options designed to let you focus on either incredible performance or remarkable fuel efficiency.

Inside the 2023 Toyota Crown, you will find one of the most stunning and innovative sedan interiors on the road, with amazing technology and refinement throughout. Every Crown comes with a gorgeous 12.3-inch infotainment system with wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a six-speaker sound system is standard, with an 11-speaker JBL Premium audio system available. You will also find the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of safety features in every 2023 Crown, which includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and a Blind Spot Monitor with a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert to help protect you on the road.

Performance

A silver 2023 Toyota Crown Limited is shown driving through an intersection.

With most sedans, it would be quite strange to talk too much about performance since many cars have an engine that can get the job done but does little else. The 2023 Toyota Crown, however, puts performance right up front with some of the most impressive engineering we have ever seen in a car. There are two engines available at the moment—though we have heard some talk about a plug-in hybrid and perhaps an all-electric option in the future—giving you options for the kind of power and efficiency you prefer.

The Standard 2.5L Hybrid Engine

The standard engine on the Crown is the perfect choice if you want bold power and a focus on peak efficiency to keep you on the road longer between stops for gas. Most Crown models come with a 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid engine that delivers a net horsepower of 236, paired with a CVT that provides a smooth driving experience. You get AWD performance on all Toyota Crown models, and the standard engine features numerous drive modes to let you switch between normal driving, sporty performance, and peak efficiency. Speaking of which, you get an estimated 42 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway with this engine.

The Available 2.4L MAX Hybrid Engine

If peak performance is what you are looking for, you owe it to yourself to check out the Platinum trim, which comes with the available 2.4L 4-cylinder Hybrid MAX engine that delivers a combined net rating of 340 hp and 400.4 lb-ft combined net torque. This beast is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that responds beautifully as you drive and an adaptive variable suspension to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride. Although fuel economy is lower with this engine, it allows the Toyota Crown to go from 0 to 60 in just 5.7 seconds. Combined with its 5.8 inches of ground clearance, driving this Crown truly feels different from any other car on the road.

Interior

The black interior is shown in a 2023 Toyota Crown Platinum.

With an all-new model like the 2023 Toyota Crown, you would expect a gorgeous interior with the latest features and options—the Crown lives up to those expectations and then some. What you find inside will depend on the trim level you choose, but every model includes an incredibly spacious interior with seating for up to five passengers. You get more than 15 cu.ft. of cargo volume inside the Crown thanks to its roomy trunk, which makes it easy to load up with everything you need to bring with you and hit the road; plus, you get more than 42 inches of front legroom and nearly 39 inches of rear legroom so everyone stays comfortable.

Standard XLE Interior Features

The standard XLE trim for the Crown comes with a Smart Key System for the front doors and trunk with Push Button Start and remote keyless entry. You get fabric front seats that are heated with SofTex trim for added luxury, including eight-way power-adjustable front seats. The standard trim has a wireless charging pad, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a stunning 12.3-inch Multi-Information driver display. This is paired with a second 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia Infotainment display, and a six-speaker sound system is standard.

Available Interior Features on Higher-End Trims

Looking at the higher trims, you get a number of upgraded interior features, such as a Smart Key System that functions with all four doors and activates a remote illuminated entry function. There is also an available Digital Key system that lets you use your smartphone instead of a physical key. The Limited and Platinum trims come with leather front seats that are heated and ventilated for added comfort, with heated rear seats and a heated, leather-trimmed steering wheel. You will also find an 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio system in the higher trims that includes a subwoofer and amplifier for an incredible listening experience while on the road.

Technology

Although most drivers take the safety of their vehicle very seriously, we would argue that nothing else is as important when looking at a car as how well it can help protect you. It would seem that the designers and engineers at Toyota agree with us because the 2023 Crown has one of the most impressive collections of safety features we have ever seen. The best thing about the impressive safety technology that the all-new Crown comes with is that you will find the majority of these systems on every model, with only a few things as available options if you want to take safety tech to the next level.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0

First and foremost, every Toyota Crown comes with the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced technologies. This includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, which can help detect the potential for a crash and provide enhanced braking support to help you avoid it. You also get Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which can easily adjust to changing traffic conditions and make long drives easier, plus Automatic High Beams that can switch off to avoid blinding other drivers. This suite includes a Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist to help you avoid drifting from your lane, along with Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist to support the other technologies.

Other Standard and Available Assistance Features

You get a Blind Spot Monitor with a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert standard on every model, which helps you avoid other drivers hiding in your blindspot or passing too fast behind you while you are backing up. There is even a standard Safe Exit Assist system designed to alert you when you are about to get out of the vehicle and approaching traffic is detected. Only a few advanced safety features are offered as available options including Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking and an Advanced Park system that can help park your Crown. A Panoramic View Monitor with a 360-degree Overhead View is also available for added visibility during low-speed maneuvering, rounding out the remarkable selection of safety technology that Toyota offers on the Crown.
