2023 Toyota Prius

A silver 2023 Toyota Prius is angled left.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, Toyota continues to set the bar high with the well-loved Prius and its hybrid powertrain. When the Prius debuted, few hybrids were on the market; now, it is a different story, as most automakers embrace hybrid technology. Still, the Prius holds fast to its status as a capable and high-tech vehicle. The 2023 Toyota Prius returns for the model year with a fresh new redesign for the first installment in the fifth generation. The new Prius is faster than ever before and looks even more refined inside and out.

The stronger hybrid powertrain Toyota crafted for the fifth-generation Prius delivers exponentially more power to the wheels, which means you can accelerate much faster than you could in the outgoing fourth-generation Prius. What sweetens the deal is that the new Prius remains efficient when it comes to fuel.

The exterior of the 2023 Prius looks sleek and modern with its sharply angular LED headlights. The front grille is minimized in favor of a more rounded nose. The windshield is also placed on a sharper upward angle, giving the Prius a slimmer, more aerodynamic profile and preventing as much noise from entering the cabin while zipping along the highway. There are many new things to experience on the 2023 Toyota Prius lineup. Let’s dive more deeply into the details when you’re ready to experience this efficient compact sedan in person; the team at Faith’s Toyota will be ready to show you everything this exciting vehicle offers.

Starting MSRP: $27,450 [a]

Horsepower (hp): 194

Touchscreen (in): 8

Fuel Economy (city/hwy MPG): 57/56

Performance

A silver 2023 Toyota Prius Limited is shown driving through a tunnel.

Whether you buy the base LE, mid-tier XLE, or lineup-topping Limited trim level, you get the same hybrid experience. A 2.0L 4-cylinder hybrid engine is paired with a 222V lithium-ion battery and an 83 kW motor. This hybrid system garners a net power output of 194 hp and gets an impressive 57 MPG in the city and 56 MPG on the highway. Power gets delivered via an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT) to the vehicle’s two front wheels. The independent MacPherson strut front suspension comes with stabilizer bars, as does the multi-link rear suspension. Electric Power Steering (EPS) is assisted by a power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system, making the Prius smooth and effortless as the system responds quickly to your turns.

The Star Safety System

The Star Safety System aids in the Prius’ braking capabilities. This system uses Smart Stop Technology (SST) to assist in panic braking. When trying to make an emergency stop, hybrid drivers often hit the brakes and gas pedals at the same time. When this happens, the Star Safety System will automatically determine that you are trying to stop the vehicle and reduce engine power in order to help complete a safe stop.

Braking

As for the brakes themselves, there are ventilated 11.1-inch front disc brakes and, in the rear, solid 11-inch disc brakes. An Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system accompanies these brakes to assist with stopping the Prius. Overall, the brake system shows a strong capacity for making smooth and safe stops at any speed.

Interior

The black seats are shown in the interior of a 2023 Toyota Prius Limited.

Toyota went to town to redesign the interior of the fifth-generation Prius. The cabin feels exponentially more luxurious than ever, and the comfort level has been amped up for 2023. The base LE trim comes with illuminated vanity mirrors on the extendable front sun visors to help you check your reflection while on the go. A single-zone automatic climate control system is standard across the lineup, pushing air throughout the cabin to keep it at the desired temperature you set. HomeLink accompanies the auto-dimming rearview mirror on the XLE and Limited trim levels, helping you control your garage door and connected smart electronics when you are not at home.

The Multi-Information Display

A 7-inch top-mounted Multi-Information Display shows you drive mode indicators, the speedometer, odometer, customizable settings, outside temperature, clock, and more. This is where you will get warning messages from your vehicle’s built-in safety system of advanced driver aids. Also, don’t worry about your passengers needing a place to charge their devices. There are a total of six USB ports: two in the front, two embedded in the center console, and two in the rear.

Seating Enhancements

When you upgrade to the Limited trim, you get several additional noteworthy features. The driver’s seat gains two memory settings, and the front seats are both heated and ventilated for an added layer of comfort. An option for heating on the rear outboard seats opens up on this trim level, too. While six-way adjustable front seats covered in cloth fabric are standard on the LE, the XLE and Limited are enhanced with Sof-Tex-trimmed seats. The driver seat is power-adjustable eight different ways and includes built-in lumbar support for more spinal comfort while sitting.

Technology

The digital gauge is shown in a 2023 Toyota Prius Limited.

Technology is abundant in the 2023 Toyota Prius. The Prius started as a tech-forward vehicle and continues that trend into the current generation. For music lovers, the standard six-speaker sound system pumps out crisp audio quality. However, an eight-speaker JBL premium audio system is equipped in the Limited trim level. It comes with its own amplifier for enhanced sound quality. You can rock out with a high maximum volume or keep it turned down to hear your rear seat occupants speak.

The Toyota Audio Multimedia System

Wireless smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard across the lineup. The LE and XLE trim levels have an 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system that helps you integrate your smartphone apps. You can use Bluetooth with it for hands-free audio streaming and placing phone calls. SiriusXM capability is included with a three-month trial period of access. Optional on the XLE and standard on the Limited is an upgraded 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system that gives you crisp visuals through the massive display.

Connectivity

There are numerous connected services available to choose from, too. Wi-Fi Connect gives the Prius Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity from AT&T and integrated streaming through Amazon Music and Apple Music; there is a trial subscription of up to 30 days/3 GB. If you want to keep it, you can subscribe after the trial period ends; just bear in mind that the functionality of this feature depends on the Prius having a 4G network connection.

Drive Connect

Drive Connect is another connected service through Toyota that might appeal to more tech-focused buyers. You can say “Hey, Toyota” to activate the Intelligent Assistant or use the navigation system with Google Points of Interest (POI) data to find a nearby place. Destination Assist helps you get to where you need to go as well. A subscription is required, and it, too, depends on the 4G network connection.

Safety

A silver 2023 Toyota Prius Limited is shown parallel parking with simulated sensor lines.

Toyota strives to make all of its vehicles safe to drive. Standard on all three trim levels is an integrated backup camera display that can help you better see behind you when backing up. Each vehicle also comes outfitted with a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. This allows you to see vehicles that are quickly approaching your vehicle’s blind spot from behind or who are lingering in it as you drive.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0

Advanced driver tools get bundled into the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system. Safety Sense gives each Prius trim level Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, and Proactive Driving Assist. What’s more, you can use the Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist system to help keep the Prius centered in its driving lane. If the system detects the wheels straying over the line, it gently guides the vehicle back into its intended position using the steering wheel. Automatic High Beams enhance your outward visibility in the dark, and Road Sign Assist detects and reads signs you pass by as you drive and displays them on the Multi-Information Display for clear visibility.

Other Safety and Driver Assistance Tools

Safe Exit Assist is a feature that can help you get out of the vehicle safely. If a vehicle is approaching too quickly, the system will alert you so you know not to open your door and get out until after the vehicle has safely passed. Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking is optional on the LE trim level but is standard equipment on the XLE and Limited. This system can help you get into and out of tight parking spaces without hassle. There is a Rear Seat Reminder that lets you know to check the back for any children or pets who need to be removed from the vehicle when you get out. This provides you with a security buffer and peace of mind knowing all your precious cargo is safe.

The Limited Premium Package

If you get the Limited trim level, there is an option to add the Limited Premium Package. This is the only optional package available for the 2023 Prius, and it is worth some consideration since it offers several safety features. It bundles together the Panoramic View Monitor, which gives you a top-down, 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings, and Advanced Park Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that helps you park the Prius.
